Mike Tonkinson leads Pfizer Oncology’s highly regarded Field Reimbursement team. Throughout Mike’s tenure, he has set the industry standard for field reimbursement assistance in oncology and continually innovates so that the evolving needs of patients are met efficiently, effectively, and with compassion.
Mike’s patient-centered focus and strong leadership shined as he championed the evolution of the Pfizer Oncology Field Reimbursement role to engage with Pfizer Oncology patients who opt-in for Field Reimbursement support in accessing their prescribed medications.
Early on, in 2010, Mike sought approval and successfully launched Pfizer’s first Access and Reimbursement team for oncology. Since then, the model that he stood up has been replicated across therapeutic areas. Pfizer was recognized in 2024 as “Best in Class” for its Oncology patient support program, based on input from over 500 Oncologists and their staff.
Mike also implemented a field reimbursement mentorship program at Pfizer to cultivate a new generation of reimbursement professionals skilled in advocating for patient access, as well as establish a culture of growth. Over the past eight years, over 44% of the participants in this program have gone on to promoted positions or have been promoted into Field Reimbursement roles.
Over his 35+ year career at Pfizer, Mike has consistently led his team to deliver amidst the ever-changing complexities of the reimbursement landscape and attuned to regulatory guidelines. He has established best practices with stringent compliance and has demonstrated design of approaches that keep patients at the center of how we show up in the field. His efforts have created a function, a team and a mission that exists to support people living with cancer.
